What is anasokoria?

Anisocoria refers to a condition characterized by a difference in the size of the pupils. This can occur naturally in some individuals, known as physiological anisocoria, where the difference in size is generally less than 1 mm and does not indicate any underlying pathology. In other cases, anisocoria may be a sign of an underlying medical condition affecting the nerves, muscles, or structures that control pupil size, such as Horner's syndrome, Adie's pupil, or third cranial nerve palsy.

Inflammation of the iris is referred to as iritis or uveitis and does not relate to differing pupil sizes directly. Excessive tearing is typically classified as epiphora, and visual disturbances encompass a variety of symptoms affecting vision but do not specifically describe pupil size differences. Therefore, the definition of anisocoria is accurately captured by the description of a difference in pupil size.
